The garden as architecture

Orchard Enclave was planned from the canopy down. We set the large trees before we set the roads. That sounds romantic. It is actually cheaper than fighting the sun for thirty years.

A veranda is a room. A courtyard is a room. A pool is a room that happens to hold water. When we draw, we draw these rooms first. The air-conditioned boxes come second.

Clients often ask for more glass. We ask for better shade. The two can live together, but shade has to win.
